On a monthly basis, the value of exports was up to €36.80 billion from €34.67 billion while imports rose to €32.23 billion from €31.13 billion in April. Both purchases and sales of machinery and transport equipment were substantially lower than in a year earlier. In contrast, food and beverages trade was significantly higher.
In line with previous readings, trade with non-EU countries increased significantly, while the value of trade with EU countries continued to decrease on an annual basis.
In volume terms, exports increased 0.7 percent and imports were down 1.0 percent when compared to the same month a year earlier. Export prices were 1.7 percent lower, import prices decreased 2.0 percent. The terms of trade of the trade improved slightly compared to May 2012.
