Brazil Unemployment Rate Below Expectations



Brazil's national unemployment rate came in at 11.2 percent in the three months to May of 2016, the same as in the previous period and the highest since the survey began in January 2012. However, figures came below market expectations of 11.4 percent.

Compared with the previous three-month period, the number of unemployed persons rose 1.1 percent to 11,440 thousand; the number of active people went up 0.2 percent to 102,289 thousand and there were 90,849 thousand employed people, 0.3 percent more than in the previous period. 

Compared to a year earlier, the number of unemployed persons rose 40.3 percent, up for the nineteenth straight period; active population went up 2 percent and employment fell for the ninth straight period, down 1.4 percent. In the three months to May of 2015, the unemployment rate was lower at 8.1 percent.

Real average earnings were estimated at R$ 1,982, slightly up from R$ 1,962 in the previous period but 2.7 percent lower than a year earlier.
