Japan's Unemployment Down to 17-Year Low


Japan's seasonally adjusted jobless rate edged down to 3.5 percent in May from 3.6 percent in the previous three months. It is the lowest level since December of 1997.

The number of unemployed persons in May 2014 was 2.42 million, a decrease of 370 thousand or 13.3 percent from the previous year. The number of employed persons was 63.97 million, up by 570 thousand or 0.9 percent from the previous year. 

The labour force increased 0.3 percent year-on-year while the number of people not in the labor force was down by 0.6 percent. The labour force participation rate was 59.9 percent.
