Brazil Unemployment Rate Stable at 5.8% in May


In May, Brazilian jobless rate was estimated at 5.8 percent, unchanged from April 2013 and May 2012, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics reported on June 20th.

The unemployed population (1.4 million persons) remained stable when compared with April 2013 and May 2012. The employed population (23.0 million persons) also remained unchanged when compared to  April 2013 and May 2012. The number of workers with a formal contract in the private sector (11.4 million) did not register any change as well.

In May, real income of employed persons (R$ 1,863.60) was considered stable against April. The purchasing power of employed persons grew 1.4 percent over May last year.

The volume of usual real income of employed persons (R$ 43.3 billion) remained stable in relation to April.

The volume of actual real income of employed persons (R$ 43.0 billion), estimated in April 2013, did not change in May and grew 2.1 percent in the one-year period.
