Dutch Unemployment Edges Up to 8.3% in May


Netherlands' seasonally adjusted unemployment rose to 8.3 percent in May from 8.2 percent in April. The number of unemployed increased by 9 thousand and amounted to 659 thousand persons, according to the latest figures from Statistics Netherlands.

Youth unemployment (15 to 24 years-old), recorded at 137 thousand, was up from 104 thousand in May of 2012 but down from 141 thousand in the previous month. It was the only age group registering an unemployment decline in a month-on-month basis.

Considering the past three months, the number of unemployed persons increased an average of 15 thousand per month. The number of unemployed in the age group of 25 to 45 years-old increased by an average of 7 thousand per month, the number of unemployed people over 45 increased on average 8 thousand persons monthly.

The number of unemployment benefits fell by 0.5 percent to 378 thousand in May. The number of benefits provided to young people up to 25 years rose by 7 percent. As in previous months, the decline occurred mainly in seasonally sensitive sectors such as agriculture and construction.
