Turkey March Jobless Rate At 7-Year High


The unemployment rate in Turkey increased to 11.7 percent in March of 2017 from 10.1 percent a year earlier. It is the highest rate for a March month since 2010 when unemployment was recorded at 12.8 percent. The non-agricultural jobless rate went up to 13.7 percent from 11.9 percent a year earlier and among youth, unemployment also rose to 21.4 percent from 17 percent.

The number of unemployed persons rose by 619 thousand to 3.642 million and employment increased by 496 thousand to 27.489 million. The labour froce went up by 1.115 million to 31.131 million while those detached from it increased by 26 thousand to 28.504 million.

The non-agricultural sector added 503 thousand jobs while 8 thousand jobs were lost in the farm sector. Employment increased in construction (0.2 percent) and services (0.4 percent) but fell in agriculture (-0.4 percent) and in industry (-0.2 percent).

On a seasonally adjusted basis, the unemployment rate edged down to 11.5 percent from 11.7 percent in February.
