Malaysia Inflation Rate Up to 1.7% in April


In April of 2013, the annual inflation rate increased for the fourth month in a row to 1.7 percent, from 1.6 percent recorded in March, mainly due to a rise in food prices.

In April of 2013, prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages were the main contributors to the overall growth, and rose by 3.8 percent. Prices for meat recorded the highest increase (10 percent), followed by prices for vegetables and sugar, jam, honey and chocolate (4.9 percent each).

Prices for housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels rose by 1.3 percent, and those for furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance increased 1.7 percent.

Although accounting for less than 7 percent of the overall CPI, prices for restaurants and hotels, education and health recorded the highest annual increases (2.3 percent, 2.1 percent, and 2.1 percent respectively).

The prices for clothing and footwear, communication and recreation and culture slightly decreased.

On a monthly basis, the inflation rate increased by 0.1 percent. Increases were for main groups health (0.4 percent); food and non-alcoholic beverages and restaurants and hotels by 0.2 percent respectively; furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance and education by 0.1 percent respectively. On the other hand, decreases were for miscellaneous goods and services (-0.4 percent); clothing and footwear; transport, communication and recreation and culture by 0.1 percent respectively. Prices for alcoholic beverages and tobacco and housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels remained unchanged.
