Compared with the three months ended in December of 2018, the number of unemployed went up by 1,235 thousand to 13.387 million.
Employment declined by 873 thousand to 91.863 million, with most of job losses occurring in public administration, defense, social security and education (-332 thousand); construction (-288 thousand); trade (-195 thousand); industry (-110 thousand); and other services (-93 thousand). On the other hand, job gains were registered in formation and communication activities, finance, real estate, professional and administrative activities (+117 thousand); hotels and restaurants (+43 thousand); transportation, warehousing and mail (+43 thousand); and agriculture, livestock, forestry, fishery and aquaculture (+33 thousand).
The number of people in the labour force increased by 361 thousand to 105.250 million and those detached from the labour force rose by 117 thousand to 65.250 million.
Compared with the same period of 2018, the number of unemployed dropped by 248 thousand from 13.634 million, while employment advanced by 1,591 thousand from 90.272 million.
The average real income was estimated at BRL 2,291 in the three months to March, compared to BRL 2,276 in the three months to December and to BRL 2,259 a year ago.
