Turkey Unemployment Rate Rises to 11-Month High


Turkish jobless rate increased for the second consecutive month to 11.1 percent in January of 2016 from 10.8 percent in the previous month and reaching a fresh high since February last year. Non-farm unemployment went up to 13 percent from 12.7 percent while youth unemployment rate was steady at 19.2 percent.

The number of unemployed persons increased to 3290 thousand from 3204 in January and employment fell by 173 thousand to 26275 thousand. Of those who were employed, 6.7 percent worked in construction, 18.3 percent worked in agriculture, 20.2 percent in industry and 54.8 percent in services. The labour force participation rate increased to 51.6 percent from 51.5 percent in the previous three months. 

A year earlier, unemployment was slightly higher at 11.3 percent. Compared to February 2015, the agricultural sector lost 30 thousand jobs while non-farm employment increased by 851 thousand: employment in services went up by 1.5 percent but fell 0.8 percent in industry and remained steady in construction.
