Japan Jobless Rate Up Slightly to 3.3% in February


The seasonally adjusted jobless rate in Japan was recorded at 3.3 percent in February of 2016, as compared to 3.2 percent in the previous month and slightly above market expectations. The jobs-to-applicants ratio stood at 1.28, unchanged from the preceding month and slightly below consensus.

A year earlier, the unemployment rate came in at 3.5 percent.

In February 2016, the number of unemployed persons were 2.13 million, a decrease of 130 thousand (-5.8 percent) from a year earlier. The number of employed persons were 63.51 million, an increase of 290 thousand (+0.5 percent) from the previous year.

The labour force  rate grew 0.2 percent from a year earlier to 65.64 million and population aged 15 and over was almost flat at 110.70 million.

The labour force participation rate increased by 0.2 percentage points. to 59.3 percent from 59.1 percent in February 2015.
