Turkish Unemployment Rate at 10%

In December of 2013, Turkey’s jobless rate edged marginally higher to 10 percent from 9.9 percent in the previous month. A year earlier, unemployment was recorded at 10.1 percent.

The number of unemployed persons increased by 19 thousand over a year earlier, reaching 2 million 809 thousand persons in the last month of 2013. Non-agricultural unemployment was realized as 12.1 percent, a 0.3 percentage point decrease compared with a year earlier and youth unemployment rate at 18.7 percent decreased by 1.1 percent.

Compared to the same period a year earlier, the employment rate increased from 44.9 percent to 45.1 percent.

The ratio of persons who worked without any social security related to the main job declined to 34.3 percent (-3.1 percent) and the share of persons who did not have any social security in agriculture decreased from 84 percent to 82.1 percent and that in non-agriculture decreased from 23.5 percent to 21 percent. 

The ratio of regular or casual employees who worked without any social security declined by 2.6 percentage points to 18 percent.
