Turkey Unemployment Rate at 10-Month High


Turkish jobless rate increased to 10.8 percent in December of 2015 from 10.5 percent in the previous two months, reaching the highest since February last year. Non-farm unemployment went up to 12.7 percent from 12.4 percent and youth unemployment rate edged up 0.1 percentage point to 19.2 percent.

The number of unemployed persons went up by 79 thousand to 3.204 million and employment fell by 228 thousand to 26.448 million persons. Agriculture lost 7 thousand jobs while the non-agricultural sector gained 814 thousand jobs: employment in services increased by 1.1 percent but fell 0.5 percent in industry and remained steady in construction. Of those who were employed, 18.9 percent worked in agriculture, 20.1 percent in industry, 7.1 percent in construction and 53.9 percent in services. 

The labour force participation rate remained unchanged at 51.5 percent.

A year earlier, unemployment was slightly higher at 10.9 percent.
