Italy Unemployment Rate Rises to All-Time High of 11.7 Percent in January


According to the national statistics institute, 22.7 million persons were employed in January 2013 (provisional data). Employment rate was 56.3 percent, unemployment rate 11.7 percent and inactivity rate 36.2 percent.

Italy's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate jumped to 11.7 percent in January from 11.3 percent the month before to hit its highest level for at least 21 years. Youth unemployment (aged 15-24) also jumped to an all-time high of 38.7 percent from 37.1 percent.

The employment rate - showing the proportion of Italians in work as a proportion of the population - fell to 56.3 percent from 56.5 percent, to its lowest level for 13 years, as reported by the national statistics institute ISTAT.  
 
In January, 97 thousand jobs were lost from the December of 2012 and 310 thousand were lost compared with January of the year before.
