Brazil Unemployment Rate Above Forecasts


The jobless rate in Brazil stood at 12.2 percent in the three months to January 2018, unchanged from the August-October 2017 period and above market expectations of 12 percent.

The number of unemployed declined by 51 thousand from the three months to October to 12.689 million while employment rose by 157 thousand to 91.702 million. The number of people in the labour force increased by 106 thousand to 104.391 million and the number of those detached from the labour force went up by 251 thousand to 64.748 million. 

Compared with the same period of the previous year, the number of unemployed fell by 232 thousand from 12.921 million, while employment grew by 1.848 million from 89.854 million.

The average real income was recorded at BRL 2,169 in the three months to January, barely unchanged from the August-October 2017 period's BRL 2,149 and compared to BRL 2,135 in the same period of last year.
