Brazil Unemployment Rate at 1-1/2-Year High


Brazilian jobless rate increased to 5.3 percent in January of 2015 from 4.3 percent in the previous month. It is the highest figure since September of 2013 as employment fell for the second straight month while unemployment increased.

Unemployment increased by 237 thousand to 1.28 million in January from the previous month. In the same period, the number of employed persons decreased by 220 thousand to 23 million. Yet, 347 thousand persons were underemployed in January, 25 thousand more than in the previous month.

The number of people either working or looking for work increased slightly to 24.292 million from 24.27 million in the previous month.
