Brazil Unemployment Rate Rises in January


In January of 2014, Brazilian jobless rate rose for the first time in four months to 4.8 percent, up from a record low of 4.3 percent in December. A year earlier, the unemployment rate was recorded at 5.4 percent.

The number of unemployed people rose 9.6 percent over December last year to 1.2 million. Employment fell 0.9 percent on a monthly basis to 23.1 million people. 

The number of workers with a formal contract in the private sector remained steady at 11.8 million and average real wages at R$ 1979.14 showed no change over December. 

Regionally, the jobless rate rose in all main regions except in Rio de Janeiro where it fell slightly to 3.6 percent from 3.7 percent in December. In São Paulo, unemployment rose to 5.0 percent.
