Switzerland Unemployment Rate Up to 3.4 Percent in January


In January of 2013, 148 thousand people were registered as unemployed with the regional employment offices (RFOs) or 5 thousand more than in the previous month. The unemployment rate increased from 3.3 percent in December of 2012 to 3.4 percent in the month under review.

Unemployment rose 14 thousand people (+10.3 percent) compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. Youth Unemployment (15-24 years) increased by 857 people (+4.2 percent) from a month earlier, rising to 21.2 thousand. Compared to the same month of the previous year, it increased by 1.8 thousand persons (+9.2 percent).

Registered job seekers amounted to 201 thousand or 4.9 thousand more than in December of 2012 and 14.4 thousand (+7.7 percent) more than in the same month the previous year. 
 
The number of vacancies has announced the RFOs increased from 837 in January 2013, to 14.6 thousand. Reductions in hours of work affected 9.7 thousand persons, 1.6 thousand more than in the previous month (+19.2 percent). The number of companies using such measures has increased by 50 (+7.8 percent), rising to 688.
