South Korea Unemployment Rate Edges Up in January


In January of 2014, South Korean jobless rate rose for the second straight month to 3.2 percent, up from a revised 3.1 percent in the last month of 2013.

The number of unemployed persons totaled 891 thousand people in January, which increased 44 thousand persons or 5.2 percent year-on-year. Compared with the previous month, more 117 thousand people were unemployed. 

The number of employed persons totaled 24,759 thousand persons in January, which went up 705 thousand persons or 2.9 percent year-on-year. Compared with the previous month, there were less 203 thousand people employed in January. 

From December 2013 to January 2014, more jobs were created in mining and manufacturing, wholesale and retail trade and accommodation. Job losses were recorded in business services, agriculture and construction. Compared with the same month last year, employment rose in all sectors, with agriculture reporting the highest job creation (4.5 percent).
