Spain GDP Growth Eases to 0.7% in Q4


The Spanish economy expanded 0.7 percent on quarter in the last three months of 2017, slightly below a 0.8 percent growth in the previous period and in line with market expectations. It is the weakest growth rate in four quarters, preliminary estimates showed. The political instability in Catalonia was expected to reduce private spending and tourism sales while strong exports was supposed to support growth, according to the latest quarterly report from the central bank.

Year-on-year, the GDP grew 3.1 percent, the same as in the previous two periods and slightly below forecasts of 3.2 percent. 
Considering full 2017, the economy expanded 3.1 percent, below 3.3 percent in 2016 and 3.4 percent in 2015. Figures matched estimates from the central bank and the government. Internal demand contributed 2.6 percentage points to growth while foreign demand added 0.5 percentage point, according to Bank of Spain estimate.
