Hungary Unemployment Rate Falls to 9.1%


In the period October to December 2013, the unemployment rate in Hungary decreased to 9.1 percent, down from 9.3 percent in the previous period and 10.7 percent a year earlier. The number of unemployed people was 403 thousand, 65 thousand less than in the same period of 2012.

The unemployment rate for the 15–24 age group was 24.1 percent, 3.3 percentage points lower than a year ago. 

The unemployment rate of those aged 25–54, was 1.6 percentage points lower than a year ago (8.2 percent), while the rate for persons aged 55–64 increased by 0.2 percentage point to 7.3 percent. 

54.9 percent of unemployed people had been searching for a job for one year or more. The average duration of unemployment was 19.7 months. 

Out of the seven statistical regions, three (Central Transdanubia, Western Transdanubia and Southern Transdanubia) had an unemployment rate below 8 percent. In all regions, except in Southern Great Plain, unemployment decreased compared with the same period last year.
