Russia Unemployment Rises to 8-Month High in December


In December of 2013, Russian jobless rate increased to 5.6 percent from 5.4 percent in November. A year ago, unemployment was recorded at 5.3 percent.

The number of employed persons decreased by 462 thousand over November (-0.6 percent) and by 632 thousand over a year earlier (-0.9 percent).

In December of 2013, there were 4.2 million unemployed people in Russia. The number of unemployed increased by 78 thousand over November (+1.9 percent) and by 365 thousand compared with the same month last year (+9.58 percent). 

There were 918 thousand people officially registered as unemployed and 70 percent were looking for a job on their own, without the assistance of employment services.
