Turkish Jobless Rate Highest in 7 Months


Turkish unemployment rate increased to 10.5 percent in October of 2015 from 10.3 percent in the previous month and above market expectations of 10.3 percent. The figure marked the highest since March.

The number of unemployed went up by 104 thousand to 3,147 million from 3,043 million in October 2014. In the same period, non-agricultural unemployment rate increased by 0.1 percentage points to 12.6 percent while youth unemployment rate fell by 0.4 percentage points to 19.3 percent.

There were 26,856 million employed persons, as compared to 26,138up 987 thousand million persons in the previous year, bringing the employment rate to 46.2 percent. Of those who were employed, 20.4 percent was employed in agriculture (-0.3 percentage points from October 2014), 20.0 percent was employed in industry (-0.5 percentage points compared to the same period a year earlier), 7.6 percent was employed in construction (unchanged from October 2014) and 52.0 percent was employed in services (+0.8 percentage points compared to October 2014).

The labor force participation rate increased 0.6 percentage points from a year earlier to 51.6 percent in October 2015. The activity rate for males increased by 0.4 percentage points to 71.9 percent, while for females it grew by 0.9 percentage points to 31.8 percent.

In October 2014, unemployment was at 10.4 percent.
