South Korea Unemployment Rate Rises in December


In December of 2013, South Korea seasonally adjusted jobless rate edged up to 3 percent, after falling to a record-low of 2.9 percent in November. However, the number employed people grew by more than half a million from a year earlier.

The number of employed persons totaled 24,962 thousand persons in December, which went up 560 thousand persons or 2.3 percent year-on-year.

The number of unemployed persons totaled 774 thousand people in December, which increased 37 thousand persons or 5.0 percent year-on-year.

The business, personal and public services sector added 230 thousand positions; the wholesale and retail trade 202,000 and mining and manufacturing 84,000. Jobs in the agriculture sector decreased by 27,000. 

The number of regular employees rose 5.8 percent on the year, while self-employed workers fell 1.1 percent.
