Australia Jobless Rate Steady at 5.8% in December


Australia's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained unchanged from a month earlier at 5.8 percent in December of 2015 and slightly below market consensus. The figure was the lowest since May 2014. The economy lost 1,000 jobs, the smallest decline since May 2010, and the number of unemployed declined by 10,900.

The seasonally adjusted labour force participation rate decreased to 65.1 percent from 65.3 percent in the preceding month.

Employment fell to 11,902,300: full-time employment rose 17,600 to 8,228,700 and part-time employment was down by 18,500 to 3,673,600.

Unemployment decreased by 10,900 to 727,500. The number of unemployed persons looking for full-time work decreased 2,600 to 515,000 and the number of unemployed persons only looking for part-time work fell by 8,400 to 212,500.

Seasonally adjusted aggregate monthly hours worked in all jobs increased 0.3 million hours to 1,645.2 million hours.
