Swiss Jobless Rate at Nearly 5-1/2-Year High


Swiss unadjusted unemployment rate increased 3.7 percent in December of 2015 from 3.4 percent in the previous month and in line with market expectations. It is the highest level since September 2010, as the number of jobseekers and unemployed went up. Youth unemployment also rose 2.8 percent from a month earlier.

In December, there were 158,629 unemployed persons enrolled at the regional employment centers, about 10,486 more persons than in the previous month. Compared to the same month a year earlier, unemployment increased by 11,260 persons (+7.6 percent). 

The number of jobseekers reached 220,209 in December 2015, more 9,323 persons than in the previous month and 16,283 more than a year earlier (+8.0 percent).

Youth unemployment (15 to 24 year old) increased by 568 persons (+2.8 percent) to 20,622. Compared with the previous month, this represents an increase of 1,461 people (+ 7.6 percent).
