Tanzania Inflation Rate Down to 4-Year Low


Tanzania annual inflation rate slowed to 4.8 percent in December of 2014 from 5.8 percent in the previous month. It is the lowest figure since October of 2010 as food prices eased.

Year-on-year, prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages increased 5.7 percent, slowing from a 7 percent rise in the previous month.

Communication cost recorded the lowest increase (0.4 percent), followed by transport (0.5 percent) and recreation and culture (0.6 percent). In contrast, housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuel posted the highest gain (7.8 percent). 

On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 0.2 percent, slowing from a 0.6 percent rise in the previous month. 

Average inflation for 2014 decreased to 6.1 percent from 7.9 percent in 2013.
