Turkish Inflation Rate Edges Up to 7.4% in December

In December, Turkey's consumer price index rose by 7.4 percent, up from 7.3 percent in the previous month. The slight pick-up was mainly driven by higher transportation and food prices.

The highest annual increases were registered in alcoholic beverages and tobacco costs (+10.5 percent), education (10 percent), hotels, cafes and restaurants (9.9 percent), transportation (9.8 percent) and food and non-alcoholic beverages (9.7 percent). On a monthly basis, food and non-alcoholic beverages prices rose 1.5 percent and transportation costs were up by 1.1 percent. 

In December, within average prices of 437 items in the index, average prices of 59 items remained unchanged while average prices of 260 items increased and average prices of 118 items decreased.

Compared to the previous month, prices rose by 0.5 percent. Compared to December of the previous year the inflation rate stood at 7.4 percent and on the twelve months moving average basis prices were up by 7.5 percent.
