US Capacity Utilization Falls to 77.4% in May

US capacity utilization edged down to 77.4% in May 2025 from 77.7% in April, falling short of market expectations and standing 2.2 percentage points below its long-run average (1972–2024).

Manufacturing utilization held steady at 76.7%, 1.5 points below its historical norm.

The mining sector’s operating rate rose slightly to 91.1%, 4.6 points above its long-run average, while the rate for utilities dropped 2.3 points to 68.5%, remaining well below its historical trend.
